Until 1973, every gay person was automatically classified as mentally ill and in need of a “cure.” The award-winning documentary Cured tells the story of the activists and allies who challenged this pathologizing diagnosis and brought about a pivotal turning point in the modern movement for LGBTQ+ equality, visibility, and dignity: the removal of homosexuality from the American Psychiatric Association’s manual of mental disorders. Join us for a screening of this documentary—which has been described as “riveting” (Queer Review), “timely and urgent” (Cinerama Film), and “one of the best documentaries of this or any year” (British Film Institute)—followed by a conversation with Bennett Singer, the film’s Emmy-nominated codirector.
